Healing Ourselves, Healing Our Communities, Healing Our Nation

Right now is a time when we need to be at our most clear and most strong, so that we can reach out to each other and create connections that will serve everyone’s health and the health of our planet. This has been a time of great pain for many people of color. We aim, specifically, to offer this workshop to this specific group at no cost in an effort to heal wounds, repair damage, and assist our communities in moving forward together in health.

Whole Heart Connection is a set of tools for mutual empowerment, and for holding non-violent core alignment in conflictual situations. The body-based nature of these practices makes them ideal for becoming conscious of, and clearing, unconscious embodied racism and sexism, including internalized racism and sexism. These are tools for fostering equality even in the midst of social power imbalance.

Our goal is the well-being of entire communities, and so we are committed to fostering personal health every step of the way. There is no division between being an activist and taking care of ourselves.

“These are life saving body-based practices. It’s life saving work. This is how to not die when people are trying to kill you. This is beyond self-defense. It’s beyond self-preservation. It’s towards health. Given the bumps and bruises and knock-downs that come along as a result of living this life; given the heart disease, hyper tension and diabetes and all these other Western diagnoses that people walk around with, particularly in communities of color, how can this work not be useful to people of color, as self-preservation? And not even just self-preservation! Because we can thrive too! We can flourish! In fact we’re gonna flourish.”

– Mahlía Joyce

“I think it’s great that we start separately and in a safe space where we can practice authentically, because my experience was different practicing some of these exercises in a mixed group as opposed to all black. I just couldn’t do some of them in a mixed group, as much as I wanted to.

“I was very impressed and grateful for how the group also quickly saw that they could trust you [Thea] and that it was a safe space. Even though you were there it was a safe space. I appreciate the conversations and your guidance in a lot of the work that has come as a result of these skills and the revelations from the exercises.”

– Raina

“Generally and specifically, this is crucial work in terms of heart emotional healing. As black women we carry the weight of our communities, not just our families, and in our business lives as well. Emotional health issues sometimes do a lot of damage, and cause physical health issues. Getting to the core where the emotional healing can take place, we can ratify and enact real changes in ourselves most importantly before we can affect that change in our communities and in our businesses as well. This workshop and others like it, whether it be with police officers or men or women or other people of color, will help address the emotional work that needs to be done in order for us to elevate to a level where we are able to secure our own mask while we are securing the mask of others.

“As I wake up in the morning, I do my breathing exercises and I work out, but I feel after the workshop I don’t have the heavy weight when leaving my house that I normally feel. It feels like me stepping into the world, instead of me stepping out against the world.”

– Laurena White
