In order to understand the process of healing from trauma, we first need to understand the nature of healing and growth as a functioning of a healthy Wood element. We also need to understand the various ways that this process can derail, in a continuum from challenge to pain to injury, and finally to the particular sense of stasis that qualifies the term “trauma.” This two-part article first explores in detail the nature of the Wood element with regard to the healthy healing process, and then describes the conditions, external and internal, that lead differentially to pain, injury, and trauma. The second part describes the process and the perils of healing from trauma and clarifies how the practitioner can assist greater safety for the recovery process.
