This workshop is taught by, and intended for, people who identify as BIPOC.

Thea Elijah teaches Whole Heart Whiteness classes that are for white people only, as well as Whole Heart Connection classes that are open to all people.

Healing Ourselves, Healing Our Communities, Healing Our Nation

Right now is a time when we need to be at our most clear and most strong, so that we can reach out to each other and create connections that will serve everyone’s health and the health of our planet. This has been a time of great pain for many people of color. We aim, specifically, to offer this workshop to this specific group at no cost in an effort to heal wounds, repair damage, and assist our communities in moving forward together in health.

Whole Heart Connection is a set of tools for mutual empowerment, and for holding non-violent core alignment in conflictual situations. The body-based nature of these practices makes them ideal for becoming conscious of, and clearing, unconscious embodied racism and sexism, including internalized racism and sexism. These are tools for fostering equality even in the midst of social power imbalance.

Our goal is the well-being of entire communities, and so we are committed to fostering personal health every step of the way. There is no division between being an activist and taking care of ourselves.

Rachelle Dixon

Rachelle Dixon is a Black Latvian American woman with over a decade of experience in teaching about health, sexuality, spirituality and gender within the LGBTQ community. She is dedicated to and passionate about serving minority populations in public health efforts and social justice actions.

“This class is like continuing education in decolonizing ourselves. It’s like a jailbreak—taking down the walls we’ve built to defend ourselves, but which have come to stand between ourselves and our full potential.”

Mahlía Joyce

Mahlía Joyce is a Black woman with over 20 years of experience in education, social justice work and community engagement. She is dedicated to and passionate about cultivating healing among individuals and communities experiencing historic and ongoing oppression.

“These are life saving body-based practices. It’s life saving work. This is how to not die when people are trying to kill you. This is beyond self-defense. It’s beyond self-preservation. It’s towards health.”

Weishin Huang

Weishin Huang (pronouns: they & he) is a first-generation Chinese American immigrant. They are committed to the life-long practice of decolonization and liberation through embodied healing and community building.

Weishin has been studying Whole Heart Connection with Thea Elijah since 2014. They are also a practitioner at Brooklyn Zen Center, a socially engaged Buddhist community committed to personal and social liberation. Currently, Weishin is pursuing a dual degree in Buddhism and social work at Union Theological Seminary and Columbia School of Social Work.

Francesca Rios

Francesca is a Latinx lawyer who first learned WHC practices with the hope of becoming a more resilient advocate. Since 2013, she has continued to learn with Thea, and brings this work with her into the courtroom, into her home, and even onto the subway.

She is dedicated to showing up with a whole heart to talk across difference, and she is inspired by the stealth healing that can happen in non-healing spaces when we approach situations—even conflicts—from a place of mutual empowerment.
