Heart Mediator 9

ZHONG CHONG Rushing Into the Middle, Middle Rushing In, Right Into the Middle of Rushing, Full Tilt Into the Middle, Center Highway

We could say that the Heart Mediator meridian begins at Heart Mediator 1, but there’s good argument for beginning on the other end, at Heart Mediator 9. We could call Heart Mediator 9 the far end of the meridian but it’s also the near end because it’s the first point to make contact when reaching out to touch someone. It’s the finger that—when we reach out to touch—this is what will get burned. In some ways it’s the ‘first point on the meridian’ because it’s the first point of contact. As two extremes of a polarity, Heart Mediator 1 and Heart Mediator 9 are in a relationship of balance between the Heavenly Love that we know from within, and the Earthly Love that we know when we reach out beyond ourselves.

We wouldn’t want to have this continuum become unbalanced. Everything about the Heart Mediator meridian is about “Am I getting closer to or further from the Perfect Love?” I may be searching the outer world, looking for earthly love out there, when right back home in Heart Mediator 1 is the heavenly love that I need. I may be home daydreaming of heavenly love, when a blind date here on earth is what I need. Balance between the two ends is what we really need.

Heart Mediator 9 is the Wood point and the tonification point on Heart Mediator, so there’s a potential impetuousness to it, a sense of, ‘Hey Jude, go out and get her.’ You’re taking the leap, making contact, extending human warmth, and reaching out to touch. People who are strong in this point can jump right into relationship.

Heart Mediator 9 brings the sense of rushing right out to our periphery to make contact. It is the springtime of intimacy, like a first date. “All right, I am going to call him up now.” If you’re doing Heart Mediator 9 on somebody because of deficiency, it helps bring a person’s boldness and warmth out so that they can reach out to others.

As the Wood Point, Heart Mediator 9 is also responsible for making sure that a person’s Wood does in fact lead to Fire. There are some rowdy or bitchy people in whom there is a lot of tumultuous Chong in the Wood element, and if the Heart Mediator is not strong enough, then that tumult is going to express as grouching and anger and argumentativeness.

Heart Mediator 9 teaches the body not to let the energy of arousal get stuck in Wood, but to continue on into Fire and become laughter. In people where the movement from Wood to Fire isn’t smooth, they need to have playful “Chong Fire” relating, exchange, maybe wrestling, some kind of tumultuous back-and-forth on a regular basis—sex is especially helpful in this regard! Even if they come across as grouchy and irritable, it’s not the fussing and fighting that they want; they want the kissing and laughing, but they forget how to get there because when their Fire gets deficient, all that’s left is the Wood half of the Jueyin meridian. They forget that they want the kissing and the playing and the laughing, and they get all cranky, and it’s hard to get near them.

Another use of this point: it’s very good for helping an impetuous would-be lover who is constantly wants to take their energy out into the world to turn it around. As the last point of the meridian, it can be needled to turn the direction of flow around so that it goes back to the first point of the meridian, and in this case the first point of the meridian really incudes all of CV 17, that first point of Chong in the chest.

Heart Mediator 9 is like a sling-shot, like a boomerang, like a revolving door at the end of the fingertip for someone whose connection energy is rushing impetuously out into the world. Needle it, and WHHHUM! all that connection energy surges just as fast and just as fully into the center of the chest. It is no longer rushing into the world center, but rushing into the Heart Mediator heavenly center here in the chest.

It is an absolutely unbelievable feeling, when that level of ardor turns around and comes back home again. You’d think, as a Wood point, that Heart Mediator 9 would charge you up—and it can do that—but it can also place you back with your own inner love with a quick change of direction.

How’s your Heart Mediator 9 right now, in the middle of summer? Are you able to reach out and make contact easily, in the season of cross-pollination and new friendships? Or are you getting lost in the social swirl (including the online swirl of social media), and need a good dose of Heart Mediator 9’s “social slingshot” energy, to come back to the Love in the center of your own chest?
